Interview with Dan of The Partisan Turbine

1. Hey bro!! Whats up!! I think the partisan turbine will really catch the attentions of the scene so Im so glad to interview one of the promising bands. First off tell us how the band started and the current line up, also whats the meaning behind the band name the partisan turbine?
The band started with Matt (Vocals), Mike, Kevin, and Kyle (old drummer). There was never a bassist til I came along about 2 years ago. About a year and a half ago we had run into problems with our drummer Kyle and we found our current drummer Matt who right off the bat fitted our style. To be honest with you also, I'm not sure what the Partisan Turbine really means haha. I know it has something to do with a torture device derived from another language into English.

2. You guys have a really diverse sound but brutal!!!!! Please describe the bands sound and what bands have influenced you guys to come up with the current music style?
In the beginning everything was pretty much all grindcore and thrashy. Wasn't until Fishy (Mike) got his hands on a Dying Fetus CD that he started coming up with heavier more metal stuff. We've matured a LOT more since then. I would say the sound that fits us more now would be some of our new tracks. Lately our influences include Severed Savior, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Hate Eternal, Revenance, and Disconformity. Most of our newer tracks are trying to bring back a more old school sound, but we like to keep it new at the same time and add a lot of groove to them.

3. The blasting parts are so solid and the drum sounds so tight!!! Tell us about that and what do you guys care about the most to create them?
Matt's pretty sick and has gotten much better since he's started playing with us. He's def. been a big part of our structure and a big part of our style. He just likes to play as hard and as fast as he can and has fun with it. We never have any complaints with anything he plays. Most of his style is really revolved around black metal drumming (one of his fav's Nick Barker). You can check him out on sickdrummer.com

4. You guys have heavy beatdowns and breakdowns. Those parts you use are really cool and diverse for me so who creates them mainly? Also whats the reason for using them within the bands sound as well?
The main writing goes to Fish. He usually gives songs a direction and Matt will follow along on drums. There's only so many different breakdowns/beatdowns you can do to keep it fresh and heavy, but we make sure we like them all or they'll never see the light of day. We use them to sound heavy. Part of our style.

5. The vocals are varied and you use low gutturals, squeals and some other kind of vocals. So describe the vocals and who influences your vocal style?
Lately it's been straight exhale and we've been happier with Matt's improvement on that. Unlike the Surgical Assault CD, they don't feature any inhales. Also the amount of squealing has been reduced dramaticly. We get asked a lot about why we did it and the main reason is because it doesn't suit us. We don't see what all the hype is about with pig squeals.

6. Describe each instruments sound, and tell us each members influences for the instruments the play.
Matt likes to keep tight on the snare. His style revolves around blast beats and one handed rolls (gravity's) as well as taking some riffs and making them as groovy as possible. Fish just likes to write whatever comes to his head. He never really talks about anything. Believe it or not Kevin is more punk oriented, but he has pulled some heavy shit out here and there. I myself just try to add groove to it and make things catchy. Most of my style is revolved around Jazz playing with different techniques to playing my bass.

7. What kind of gear setup do you guys use?

Matt - DW kit, Zildjian and Sabian Cymbals, and grindstix
Matt L - Shure mic
Kevin - Crate GT3500H head, Gibson Guitar, and a B-52 Cab
Fish - GLX1200H head, Jackson Guitar, and a Crate Cab
Dan - GK2001RB head, sansamp, and a Fender American Jazz

Haha, I hope you weren't expecting more?

8. What future releases will you have? Also, do you have merch available?
We have our new Self-titled release which will be in stores in August I believe, not sure exactly on the date, but we also had some killer artwork done by Toshihiro Egawa (Devourment, Internal Suffering). Once we get the full print of it we will post a picture on the myspace, but that will def be pressed on a shirt. We will have these self-titled CD's on the road with us during out Summer tour. We'll be printing up an assload more of shirts before then as well. Check what we have left at www.indiemerchandise.com/thepartisanturbine

9. Your band is a newer cool guttural grind band based out of New York. So besides your band, I guess theres a lot of bands playing new styled and their own sounds like the partisan turbine. Maybe most of the bands stay underground. For sure New York is one of the places showing us the most cutting edge sick styled music, so what happened to there recently and are there any new bands worth mentioning?
Well coming from Long Island there is a very small population of guttural or even slam-death bands/crowd. We're one of those locals here that stands out a little more from the rest because of what we play and also for being really young and having lots of friends to come and support us. Three bands that need mentioning entirely: Revenance, Without Remorse, and Criminal Element. Check ALL of these guys out and you won't be dissapointed.

10. What bands have you been into recently? Also, have you found any cool bands from myspace?
Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Severed Savior, Beneath The Massacre, Hate Eternal, SLAYER!!!, and old Dr. Dre.

11. As I said before, your band has real originality. So tell us what makes the partisan turbine different from other bands? Also, whats the main goal of the bands sound?
Well our stuff isn't technical at all really, we just try and have fun with it and make it as catchy and death metal as possible. The current goal is to bring a real old school sound death-metal style back, but have more groove oriented breakdowns instead of the slow heavy shit (but it's still there :])

12. Thanks for the intie. Tell us the bands future plan and etc. Any last words!?!
We hit Summer tour at the end of June then come back from Europe Mid August. We won't be touring anymore 'cause we all have to get back to school etc., but we hope this CD does well. MOST IMPORTANTLY we hope people support us and we gain a little more recognition in the community from this tour and cd. We are by no means, trying to be the heaviest band ever and act tough. We do it for fun and we're really glad people like it. We're a crazy group of kids so if you ever meet us, come smoke us out or sip some brews for sure. Anyone else trying to make it as a band, keep doing what you're doing. Thank you everyone for the support thus far, we hope it continues to grow and thanks Seiji for interviewing us.
