Interview with Steve from Septic Devourment

1. hey steve!!! i'm grateful for you granting me this interview, i've been keeping my eyes on septic devourment for a while now. first of all, tell us a brief history of the band , why did your previous band spinfed break up etc.
Well, Septic Devourment formed from the remnants of Spinefed. Most of the members of Spinefed, exsept for me(Steve Giddens-guitars) and Mark Davis(drummer), wanted to go for more of a metalcore sound kind of like Lamb of God and Black Dahlia Murders. ME and Mark werent really too happy with this change, and the rest of Spinefed didnt feel that the band could move on with out me and Mark, so they quit. Then we called in Justin to play bass for the remaining Spinefed shows that we had, and good friend Floyd Ball came in on second guitar. The material we were writing was way faster and way more brutal then Spinefed, so we renamed the band Septic Devourment.Soon after the band formed, things got kinda hectic, and Justin had to leave the band, then Mark and Floyd started flaking out and they moved to Arkansas. So i brought in Shane Fallon on Drums and Derek "Wheels" Munday on vocals. Soon after, Justin came back in on Bass and now we have the most Brutal Line up to date!!!!

2. describe your band's sound!!
WE play nothing but Pure Blasting Brutality With lots of Ultra Groovy Breakdowns and fast head crunching double bass!!!!

3. i cant wait for new cd from torture fiend that's coming out !! how did you hook up with torture> fiend? your friends with justin right?
Ya. me and Justin have been good friends for years.Soon after the the first time he left Septic Devourment,he came up with Torture Fiend Webzine, he found a few bands(God Made Filth, Atheosophy to name a few) and made his webzine into a Record Label. He just asked us one night if we wanted to be a part of the family, and of course we had to jump on it.

4. justin of torture fiend plays in leprotic now. i've heard that he helped out with forming septic devourment.tell us about that in detail.
Ya he was the first person i called when Spinefed broke up. I knew he was capable of doing it and he was one of the only people i knew who could. But Leprotic is his number one project, so unfortunatly we are gonna have to look for another bass player in a few months after the Gathering of the Sick.

5. where do you generally play gigs? you ever play in texas or new mexico? and how was the gathering of the sick fest in new mexico?
We usually play gigs in Texas.Texas, in my opinion, has the sikkest scene around. I've only played in New Mexico once and that was when i was in Spinefed. But New Mexico has a sikk scene also.It was about 2 years ago and we played the 3rd Gathering of the Sick. Deeds of Flesh and Goratory Headlined and it was fukkin sikk as fukk!!! This years Gathering of the Sick is gonna be the Sikkest ever!!!! Bands like Severed Savior, Decrepit Birth, Odious Mortem, Disgorge, Internal Suffering, and more are on it this year. I cant fukkin wait.Check out the Website at www.gatheringofthesick.com Also, my other band Infliction is gonna be playing the Gathering of the Sick. Check out Infliction at www.infliction.us and www.myspace.com/inflictionus

6. i think you got a completely original sound. what bands influence you when create music?
Thanks man, im glad you think so.Of course like most bands, we dont really want to sound like all the other death or grind bands around. But our main influences are:Suffocation!!!! Gorgasm, Decapitated, Devourment,Internal Suffering and Aborted. And many more but theres too many to name!!! WE just love BRUTAL DEATH GRIND!!!!!

7. what's the strong points for bands from oklahoma? for instance bands in califormia have ultra blastings and technical and brutal guitars like disgorge and deeds of flesh.and texas has the slam parts like devourment.
Shit, fukkin Oklahoma sux!!! HAHAHA... There really isnt no strong points in Oklahoma cause all the bands in Oklahoma do there own thing i guess. AS for Septic Devourment,we take influences from all over thats what makes us who we are. As for Oklahoma, most of the bands around here, at least in my opinion, are too generic and arnt really going anywhere.

8. any sick bands from oklahoma worth mentioning? and hows your scene in general?
Ya there actually is a few bands in Oklahoma worth mentioning, but not very many. One band called Exitium, they are really badass grindcore in the vein of Nasum and Rotting Sound. Check em out at www.exitiumgrind.com Also theres a band called Blunt Force Trauma, they sound kinda old school kinda like Malevolent Creation exsept with more groovy breakdowns.check em out at www.bluntforcetrauma.tv AS for the scene in Oklahoma, its ok sometimes. If we get a really big band like Suffocation or Cannibal Corpse, then alot of people show up, and alot of people around here is about 150 to 200 people. If we try and put on a underground show like Severed Savior or Disgorge, then we are lukky if 50 people show up.So its pretty hard to have a good strong scene in Oklahoma.

9. what releases do you have planned for the future? and will you have any merch? i wanna get band a tshirt.
The only release we have planned now is the "Baby Guts and Torsos" Cd coming out on Torture Fiend Production. Its gonna have 5 or 6 songs on it with some samples. When ever that comes out, then we will work on T Shirts and Stikkers and so on....

10. what are your plans for the future? you plan on playing overseas?
We just want to finally get our CD out for now.We would love to play overseas, that always been one of our biggest dreams ever.WE would love to play in Japan. WE heard some good things about there. And Vomit Remnants is also one of our favorite bands, so it would be cool to jamm with them one day!!!

11. why did you come up with the name septic devourment? what's the meaning behind it? and is it related to the band devourment?
Mark Davis(our old drummer) came up with that name a long time ago cause one of his favorite bands is Devourment. It was kinda just something that floated around, we never really ment to use it,but thought it was catchy so we stukk with it. People sometimes make fun of us for it,but its usually people that arnt into death metal or if they havent even heard us yet. SHIT EATERS FOREVER!!!

12. ok last question steve, what are your favorite bands and which are some newer bands that you've heard recently that impressed you?
Right now ive been listening to alot of Aborted,Cephalic Carnage, Devourment, Suffocation,Dyscrasia,Odious Mortem,Beheaded and Internal Suffering. The newest band that has really caught my attention is Abysmal Torment. In my opinion, those guys are one of the sikkest bands around right now.Fukkin Badass Breaks and fast fukkin drummer!!!

huge thanks steve, i'll keep spreading your bands name out in japan. any final words for the fans or any plugs you wanna give?
Thanks alot seiji!!! Your fukkin badass dude!!! And to everyone out in Japan, check us out at www.septicdevourment.us and sign the guestbook!!! Hope to see everyone there one day when we come to invade!!!!!! FUKKIN BRUTAL!!!
