Interview with Wayne of Ruthless Beatings
1. hey Wayne! finally your back with a new band called ruthless beatings! so first off tell us what you've been doing after you left devourment and how
did you hook up with my bro brian of artery eruption and alex (ex-artery
eruption)? 5. does Brian also spew his sick ass gutturals for the band or is he
concentrating on playing guitar? I hope you and Brian both do vocals and
create an unmatchable dual vocal assault! 8. what bands have you been into recently? 11. do you have any other projects besides ruthless beatings?
When I first left Devourment for the first time, I mainly focused on my
piercing career still always listening to brutal music. since then I have
had many projects including doing guest spots with Devourment but nothing
ever materialized permanently. Brian and I have kept in touch since 03' and
when I decided I wanted to truly get back into the music scene, he was
first on my list. when we talked about this new project ruthless beatings we were
really excited about this. He knew Alex really well and it came together
really quickly. We are all really stoked.
2. what kind of sound will ruthless beatings have and what bands can you
compare your sound too?
I listen to so many forms of death metal so its hard to compare a band we
are going to sound like, but I can say this, anyone into ultra brutal low
vocals and heavy ass breakdowns will be a fan of Ruthless Beatings. Some of
the bands that would be influences on Ruthless Beatings imparticular would
be Old Repudiation, Disconformity, Heinous Killings, and of course
Devourment and Artery Eruption .
3. what vocalists have influenced you to come up with your own style of
vocals? and describe your vocals strong points in your own words.
My first influences were Darrel Wagner (Pyrexia), Frank Mullen
(Suffocation), Rich Turnball (Repudiation) and so many more, too many to
name. And for the second part of your question, that's kind of a hard
question for me to answer bro. I'll do my best. I would say my vocal
patterns are very original and are one of my stronger points. There are
many sick vocalists out there doing ultra low vocals, but I do think that when
somebody hears me, whether it was in Devourment or in some guest spots I've
done in other bands, I think that I stand out. Not because I am heavier or
better than most brutal vocalists out there but I think that I can get
points for originality.
4. your known as one of the most sickest vocalists ever so can we expect
any new vocals on ruthless beatings or is it classic Wayne knupp material?
I think that everything that Ive done definitely has changed over the years
even looking back at the old demos from Devourment. Just look at those old
recordings and compare them to my performance on the demo of Autoerotic
Asphyxiation. I think its still sounds like me but there has been definite
progression over the years. I will say that on Ruthless Beatings there will
be vocal dynamics for sure but Im focusing on the ultra low aspect of my
voice.
Actually you can expect a three way assault from Brian, Alexander and I. We
have talked about this from the beginning and because both Alexander and
Brian have sick ass vocals, it would just make perfect to have them do
backups. I also think that will add to the vocal dynamics of this project.
6. I expect the band to have tons of slams and breakdowns but what style
will they be like, Devourment and artery eruption styled or something
different?
Definitely a combination of the two, but this will NOT be a Devourment or
Artery Eruption sequel. Of course we will have influences from our previous
or current bands, but Ruthless Beatings will absolutely have a sound of its
own.
7. the band logo was done by mike Majewski and it looks sick as fuck so
does it fuel some old urges having mike contribute to the band in some way?
First of all, Mike did a sick ass job on the logo, he is a sick ass artist
and I appreciate the hard work he did on our logo. Of course Ive talked to
Mike on the phone about this project and he sounded excited for me. He
knows Ive been wanting to do a brutal ass project for a long time and its finally
happening. Mike and I are still really good friends, and its awesome he is
supporting us the way he is as well as the rest of Devourment. Just to
throw this in right now, I think Mike did a sick ass job stepping up to the plate
as the front man of Devourment. His vocals brutalize!!!!
I like all types of metal, too many bands to name. But as far as brutal
bands go, Disconformity, Images of Violence, Heinous Killings, Putrid Pile,
Macabre, Vomit Remnants, Vomitous, Immersed In Blood, Mortician,
Suffocation, Devourment, Artery Eruption, Decrepit Birth, Godless Truth,
Guttural Secrete, Vitality, Inhuman Dissiliency, Malignancy, Rompeprop,
Surgery, Waking the Cadaver, Cryptopsy, Dehumanized, there are so many
other sick bands to list, pretty much all the bands that are going to be at CDF
and many more.
9. as for Alexander the drummer what can we expect from him in terms of his
style and sound?
That fucking kid is brutal! Sick ass feet, fast fucking hands, sick ass
gravity blast and brutal fucking grooves!!!
10. what releases will you have and will there be any kind of merch to go
with it?
Right now we are focusing on the first release. There will definitely be
merch and we all plan to take this band to the next level. This is becoming
way more than a one CD project in our eyes. The first release should be out
in early 07' titled D.emoralized E.aten A.nd D.efecated.
No, this is my first project since Devourment in almost 10 years! I am
putting all my focus in Ruthless Beatings. I just want to release all my
musical aggression over the years in this project. This fucking shit is
going to Crush!!! The only other thing I have going on is me and my good
bro David Myre are working on developing the website death metal.us The site
should be up soon.
12. ok last question, how has being in Devourment influenced you musically
and what do you hope to accomplish with ruthless beatings?
Pretty much Devourment was all my previous musical influences all in one
sick ass band. My tastes have evolved, yet so have I and Ruthless Beatings
will be a reflection of that.
thanks Wayne i'm so honored to have interviewed you! is there anything
you'd like to add for our readers?
I appreciate you doing this interview bro. I want to give a shout out to
all my boys, you know who you are. Support the scene and I better see all you
sick fucks at the California Death Fest. I would also like to thank all the
fans for their support over the years. I get so many awesome comments and
sick ass e-mails, you guys are fucking awesome!!!
MANY RANCID GURGLETATIONS!!!
