1. Hey Daniel thanks for granting me this interview! unfortunately your band offal stench broke up but I wanted to hear about the band so I decided to interview you. ok first off give us a brief history of the band.Brutal Hails Seiji,well...we started jamming in december 2003,we all were fans of brutal death metal so thought lets play it then.we started off as a 3 piece just drums,gats and vokills,kept it like that for a while,writing songs as often as possible.we gained a bassist in mid 2004 and started doing gigs.recorded a demo in october 2004 that gave us a good feed back.thats about it really.
2. Offal stench is a killer guttural slamming band kind of like devourment, artery eruption, sect of execration and etc. so why did you decide to start this kind of music and do people love devourmnet styled breakdown bands over there in new zealand?
yeh we have breakdowns/slams in almost every song.we started the whole slam styled thing cause no one else in New Zealand had that sort of style down for there band,plus no one really used gutturals and gurgles so was another addition i guess for the scene here.yeh man a few people dig the devourment buzz over here,not many people really get into the underground brutal shit here but it's slowly progressing.
3. What bands influence your style of guttural vocals and gurgles? And which do you prefer to use inhale or exhale gutturals? and tell us what's your vocals offer that no one else's does
well devourment,artery eruption,sect of execration,screaming afterbirth and malignancy is where i get my guttural/gurgle inspirations from.im a huge fan of ruben rosas,wayne knupp and especially KP ripper from SxAx,those cunts just tear it up yal.i do all exhales with all my vocals,but yeh like keeping original is all good,bit hard to i guess these days with so many rotten gurglers out there but i try my best lol.
4. normally how did you create songs? did the guitarist mainly come up with slam parts and then you put some vocals on them or did you do it a different way?
well basically we all helped out to write songs.lindsey the guitarist would come up with riffs,id cum up with riffs and work from there.hah 1 song the drummer ricki wrote just on the drums and added gats to it,was prolly one of our best songs to.but yeh we all played a big part in the writting.get the song cumpleted then add vocals from there and yeh song done.
5. what kind of gear do you guys use?
used a crate head,laney speakers,a diffrent asortment of cymbals,tama drum kit,axis kick pedals.
6. so what releases do you have? I guess you only have a demo named fumes of evisceration and you will release a split cd with artery eruption so who decided to release this split cd? I've heard more bands will join this split cd as well actually so tell us about this release.
yeh well we got the fumes of evisceration demo that we did.this artery split im not sure about,think lindsey is sorting that all out,but i dont know fuk all about it lol.random a top american act wants a low key Kiwi band to do a split with....brutal hails to them cunts \m/
7. now the band is split up but will you reform offal stench in the future? i know you started a new band named contagion so does this new band sound like the devourment/artery eruption style you used in ofal stench? tell us a bit about contagion and what the other members of offal stench are doing band wise.
Offal will prolly not reform,ricki(drums) and rob(bass) now live in the north island of New Zealand.yeh ricki,rob and I started a new band called Contagion.its a blend of stuff like devourment meets cephalic carnage sorta.so hopefully it gets off well and we might have a recording sometime in the near future.yeh man all the others in offal had/have other bands bar me really.ricki and rob are both in a band called Odius Embowel,which is sum fucking sik as brutal grindcore man.rob was also in a band called Torturor and another called Scrotum.lindsey has a few projects going like Place Of Skulls,Morgus and Lord Goat.so yeh a slight incestual scene here band member wise lol.
8. what bands and releases have you been into recently and how's the scene in new zealand? Any sick new bands you want to mention?
um i been thrashing the new Screaming Afterbirth/Methadone Abortion clinic split recently,its fucking sik as,SxAx fucking rule.also been thrashing sum Copremesis,Abysmal Torment(these cunts are fucking amazing),bowels Out,Artery Eruption and Devourment as always,Pig Destroyer,Immaculate Molestation and fuking heaps more.yeh bro the scene here in NZ is blooming nicely man,not many brutal death bands here really.Relentless Attrition,Corpsefeast,Backyard Burial,Meatyard,Torturor and Odius Embowel are the other brutal as shit.got other good bands here like Dawn Of Azazel,Ulcerate,Asphyxiate,Demiurge,Brutalized Mortality.yeh the aussie kiwi connection i personally feel is a little weak,for 2 cuntrys so close you'd think there might be arrangements to tour either cuntry and what not,but just have to see what happens in the future.
9. i know you really dig Japanese bands like glossectomy, disconformity and etc. but what do you think makes them such great bands and how have they influenced offal stench and your current band contagion?
yeh man those bands fucking kill,dig the relentless grooves and breakdowns.and seems them Japanese dudes know how to gurgle it,fucking sik man.influenced us in the way how to get your groove on and boogie on down hahaha.but yeh bro the japan scene seems to be going off with all this new bands comming out and getting recording out fairly quickly aswell.
10. how did you get into this kind of music? In new zealand was this kind of music popular before you started the band? now there's probably lots of young bands trying to imitate offal stenchs sound and at least you gave these young kids a chance to listen to this guttural slamming stuff through offal stench!!
progression really from what you start to listen to,just wanted faster more brutalier shit and it happened.there's always been a good scene here,nothing extremely heavy/brutal,so that why we wanted to take it further and just try do the brutaliest heaviest sikest shit we could possibly do.more bands sorta getting out there with a good brutal sound and feel which is good.yeh man young kids liked what they heard of us which is always good to hear,we got a local metal radio show i did and played heaps of offal and other brutal NZ shit aswell as from around the globe.
