Interview with Anatoly of Katalepsy
1. hey man it's good to hear a new band coming out of russia there
isn't
enough in my opinion haha, so first off tell us how katalepsy started
and
what's the current line up!! 5. what's the current russian scene? any other bands besides you and
abominable putridity that play this kind of style of death metal worth
mentioning? 8. what are you listening to lately?
The group was formed in 2003 in Moscow and we played our first gig
after 6
months at the Moscow Brutal Death Fest. The line-up consists of Sergey
(guitar), me- Anatoly (bass), Helv (guitar), Nikita (vocal) and Alex
(drums)
2. describe the bands sound and what bands influence the band when it
comes
to your current style?
were influenced by bands like Suffocation, Pyrexia, Cryptopsy, Deeds of
Flesh and Scrambled Defuncts (a cult brutal death band from moscow) and
the basic
point of our style was to focus on speed and the technicality and
combine
that with traditional (for this style) scene behavior. in 2004 Ardentis
joined
the band as the frontman but he left the band in the beginning of 2005
because he had no time for his main project Stardown. we changed our
style a bit
and focused more on slow slamming riffs and rhytms and our live show
was able
to get that point across because it wasn't typical of the moscow scene.
Ardentis’s was crazy on stage always jumping and rolling around on
stage while
Sergey’s participation in Abominable Putridity made for a much
stronger
influence on Katalepsy as well which in turn made Katalepsy’s music
more aggressive
and cruel.
3. i heard you guys used play with a different style than your current
playing style so why did you guys change it up and what motivated you
to do that.
Suffocation was our first big influence so we all wanted to play in
that
sort of style when we started the band but our tastes changed under the
pressure
of brutal hardcore, metalcore and new school death metal bands so we
changed
our style as well because of what we were listening too. so we took
bits and
pieces from the bands and styles we've listened to over the years as
fans
and we combined them to form our own material which can be heard on our
debut
cd “Musick Brings Injuries".
4. heavy breakdowns and slams are an integral part of your band but now
a
days there's tons of bands that use them so what does katalepsy do
differently
from those bands?
In any business what's most important is not WHAT you are doing but HOW
you
are doing it! Never mind that there's tons of bands around playing the
same
style as us, what's important is how deep and passionate you feel in
what your
playing and that is what makes Katalepsy different among those other
bands
and i think our live shows show that and if they don't just listen to
our
forthcoming release.
For the past couple years our scene has had a lot of new groups show up
and
basically they play old school style brutal death metal or gore grind
despite
the new school trend in Russia now, it's weird it's like....If you like
bands like Sect of Execration then why does your music sound like old
Obituary
or Morbid Angel? as for low guttural death metal only us and Abominable
Putridity play that kind of death metal but there is this other band
called Aborted
Fetus from Perm but even there more sort of modern style death metal
and
there not really close to us sow e don't play with them that much.
6. what releases will you have in the future? are you negotiating with
any
labels for merchandising or anything?
We completed the recording sessions of our first album which was record
in
Navaho Hut Studio and the cover art and the layout will be created by
Phlegeton Art Studio. The release date is sometime in January and you
can reserve it
on our site or on our label Soulflesh Collector site, The label’s
director
Mirus is also our manager too.
7. the vocals are low as fuck gutturals so tell us about your vocals
like
what kind of vocals you use and who influences your vocals and etc.
well listen to the album and you'll see what kind of vocals i sue haha
but
there definitely brutal taht i can guarantee. as for Influences on my
vocals
i'd say Matti Way, Rubin Rosas, and Mike Majewski.
i don't have much time to sit down and listen to stuff as much as i'd
like
with recording and my family and my job and etc. but i listen to
various
things and as of late i been listening to Abysmal torment, Carnivore
diprosopus,
SikFuk, Glass casket, Guttural secrete, Impending doom(US), Job for
cowboy,
Lividity, Saprogenic, Skinless, Vitality, Hatebreed, Between The Buried
And Me.
9. you guys have any other projects besides katalepsy? what about bands
before katalepsy?
Sergey was a guitar player in Abominable Putridity but he ultimately
left
that band and now he is committed solely on Katalepsy. other than that
not
really we've all basically played in the same bands but non-russian
readers
probably wouldn't understand it haha.
10. so what are the bands plans from here on out?
To release the disc and play a lot of great gigs! In the summer we are
planning to go to Europe for sum fests and we've already started
working on
material for our next release.
Thanks again for doing this interview i appreciate it dude, is there
anything you'd want to add?
Thanks a lot for the interview and your support! be sure to check out
our
debut album and hopefully it doesn't disappoint the fans out there and
also we
are interested in taking part in brutal fests so any organizers please
get in
contact with us!
