Interview with I Declare War
1. hey bro thanks for the intie.recently i get into your band i declare
war alot!! first off tell us the bands history, where are you from, the
current line up and etc.
We started in Seattle in 2005. Jake and Randy were the original
members. They wanted to be like As I Lay Dying, back when people thought they
were heavy. Zack and previous guitar player Kevin joined later as well
as vocalist Garrett. Garrett was replaced with current vocalist Jon in
November of
2005. In early 2006 Evan joined the band and the band is currently
with Jake and Evan on guitar, Zack on bass, Randy on drums, and Jon doing
vocals. We recently got signed to a new record label called Compton
Records and our new CD drops on June 12.
2. most of you are straight edge?? i guess you guys are heavily
influenced by hard core music.so describe your music and what bands mean alot
for you?
We are mostly straight edge, but we are trying to distance ourselves
from the hardcore scene more and more and be more metal. None of us
really have much hardcore influence other than Randy. Bands we take
influence from are The Acacia Strain, As Blood Runs Black, The Red Chord, and
Suicide
Silence.
3. your vocals are pretty sick.those are for sure gutturals.tell us your
vocals style and what bands influence you alot? and why did you start
to use gutturals?
A lot of Jon's influence comes from Premonitions of War and Animosity.
We use gutturals because they are just face-meltingly heavy. Jon will
do whatever he can to make the songs heavier.
4. you guys play a plenty of breakdowns.so who mainly creates them and
how do you come up with those parts? any particular bands motivate you
to create them maybe?
as for breakdowns, fuck yeah, we love those! Our EP is mostly
breakdowns. Jake usually writes the breakdowns by sitting down with a guitar and
hitting it randomly until he finds a rhythm he likes what he's playing.
5. i think the band has some elements of metal core.how do you think
about that?
We listen to a lot of metalcore and try to be the heaviest metalcore
band we can without being totally death or grind. We haven't ever really
considered ourselves a grind band, but I guess that's where The Red
Chord influence lives.
6. what kind of gears do guys use?
Randy uses a Orange County Custom Percussion drum set. Jake and Evan
play Peavey 5150's and 6505 heads. Zack plays a Warwick bass and has a
rack full of gear. Randy has endorsements from Axis Percussion and Attack
Drumheads. Evan, Jake, and Zack are endorsed by Basson Cabinets.
7. now tell us about your scene.any cool new bands there? i guess there
are both great hard core bands and death metal bands there.
There are a lot of great bands around here, both in metal and hardcore,
but we feel we stand out style-wise because of the heaviness of our
music. There are bands that are really heavy but we seem to have our own
style for music up here.
8. what kind of releases and merch will you have for future?
Our full-length CD "Amidst The Bloodshed" is coming out on Compton
Records on June 12th. All of our merch can be found on our Myspace
(www.myspace.com/ideclarewar) or on our label's, www.myspace.com/comptonisdead.
9. you guys have side bands besides i declare war?
No, we are busy enough as it is with work and this band. We have plans
to make side projects called Savage Mayhem and Rectal Gingivitis. Watch
for that shit. They'll rip you a new asshole.
10. what bands have you been into recently?
Suicide Silence, The Acacia Strain, The Red Chord...pretty much the
only bands we listen to. Jake listens to a lot of pussy shit like emo and
pop punk too (he's a fag).
11. thanks for the intie bro.any last words you would like to add?
Thanks for the intie, spread the word of the Dub. Amidst The Bloodshed
out June 12! Hopefully Japan will experience the majesty that is I
Declare War sometime soon.........
