Interview with Shogun of Disconformity/Exacerbate
1. shogun, first off thanks for the interview. i guess you have listened to hard core a lot but how and why did you join disconformity the death metal band? 5. you listen to beat down styled hardcore and deathcore as well as texas styled slamming bands so
what do slams and breakdowns mean to you? 9. i remember in the first demos songs there mostly constructed by slow parts but you guys play fast and technical parts in the new song so what will the bands sound be like in the future?
thanks too bro, i listened to thrash metal and death metal when i was a junior high school student and after that i started to listen to hardcore. actually i was in some NYHC styled bands but wanted to form a death metal band and then i met the other members of disconformity and formed this band.
2. describe the sound of exacerbate which you were in and how does it differ from disconformity? and have you used gutturals since you were in exacerbate?
EXACERBATE was around in 2001.and the bands sound was hardcore with a heavy death metal approach. bands that influence exacerbate are death metal bands such as DEVOURMENT, PROPHECY, INFERNAL DOMINION, DYING FETUS, INTERNAL
BLEEDING, BURIAL, SKINLESS, and ETERNAL SUFFERING as well as hardcore bands such as
MERAUDER, COLD AS LIFE, ALL OUT
WAR, NEXT STEP UP, TRAUMASIDE, DICIPLES BERKOWITZ, INTEGRITY, STIGMATA, and DYING
BREED. the difference between DISCONFORMITY and exacerbate is that EXACERBATE is more slow and the songs are more simpler than disconformity. i didn't use gutturals in exacerbate i used normal death metal voices and as for shows i shared stages with a lot of hardcore bands.
3. you are one of the sickest gutturalists in the scene so what bands influenced you to come up with your current vocal style?
for sure DEVOURMENT influences me a lot! i remember i was so surprised when i heard their songs at first and i really like the vocal style of matti way when he was in CINERARY. besides gutturals, James Hetfield of metallica, David Vincent (ex-morbid angel), Max Cavalera (ex-sepultura), and jorge of MERAUDER are some of my favorite vocalists.
4. describe your vocal sound! you mainly use exhale gutturals right? do you use other styles of vocals and what do you think about inhales?
i always try to use both highs and lows as sick as possible like beast while trying to get the point across that i'm actually saying words and not just making noises. as of right now i don't do any other style of vocals but i want to try to do somewhat of a different style of vocals, personally i want to use normal death vocals cuz i've used gutturals for years and forgot how to spew normal death vocals haha. as for inhales there ok if they are brutal i've tried to do them once but that didn't work out to well.
personally i feel slamming parts are more brutal than the fast and technical parts and people can dance easily and i myself get so excited and want to give it my all and go crazy while we play those parts. as for the songs themselves KEISUKE our talented guitarist creates them all himself so i never really get involved or need to for that matter haha.
6. what bands have you been into recently?
i listened to MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, BOLT THROWER, ENTOMBED, early BRUTAL
TRUTH, METALLICA, MEGADETH, and ANTHRAX a lot when i was a high school student and still listen to them to this day. recently i been listening to INCANTATION, INFERNAL DOMINION, MUTILATED, MALIGNANCY, DEHUMANIZED, and CRYPTOPSY. as for 90's hardcore bands MERAUDER, JUSTICE
UNKNOWN, TENSION-NY, BULLDOZE, FURY OF FIVE, NEGLECT, FAHRENHEIT 451, SUBZERO, DARKSIDE NYC, INTEGRITY, and the CRO-MAGS are just some of what i listened to to name a few. i don't listen to newer bands too much i don't have the time to check them out.
7. tell us all the bands you did guest vocals for and do you have any side bands?
i did guest vocals for mostly hardcore bands such as a disbanded band named DSL that was around in tokyo that was ny styled and kinda like hatebreed or sworn enemy. LIVE IT DOWN which also split up was another band i did guest vocals for and CREEPOUT as well which i just finished doing sum vocals for their upcoming tribute album to "integrity" which will be released through ESCAPIST RECORDS so check that out when it's released. PROUD OF GRACE is another band from tokyo which includes my friend and it's a kind of mix between deathcore and plain death metal and hardcore, i did gutturals for them for their recent demo so check that out too. as for side projects i want to do one but i don't have time to work on it right now but it would be just a simple slam and beat down style band
8. how's JPDM's scene recently? any other new bands?
i think the scene is going well i don't follow it too closely but there's a good amount of active bands in tokyo such as DEFILED,VOMIT REMNANTS, WOUNDEEP, INFECTED
MALIGNITY, and REST IN GORE. the show in tokyo "BIZZARE VOICE " organized by defiled and its done
every in a month, sick and brutal bands and kids get togerther for it from
all over places.as for new bands INHUMAN DEVOTION and DETRITUM are cool and over in osaka INFERNAL REVULSION is kicking ass, their shows just kill man and in 'kyushu' there's the gore grind band VISCERA INFEST and old school styled death metal band RORBO HECATE plus grind band HYDOROPHOBIA and etc.
yeah the new song seems different than the older ones and more technical but if you listen to it it's surprisingly catchy. is has old school death metal like catchiness and we do regret there's no slamming parts in it cause personally i want there to be slamming parts and i'm not sure how disconformity's sound will be in the future but i'm sure we'll be doing a lot more different things than most other bands of this style.
10. you guys will play at the california death fest so what do you expect from it and what do you want to show to fans over there?
Many of my favorite bands will play there and i want to see their performances actually but we are second to none and we want fans to see disconformity and i will be glad if they feel something after seeing our performances.
11. i think disconformity has diversity that tons of other guttural
slamming bands dont have.so tell us about that and upcoming releases and futures plan!
as for divirsity, its all up to the sense of keisuke the main song
writter.strong point of songs he creates is that techy riffs and
catchy slamming riffs exist togerther in good timing.he is now 31 years
old, single and believer in suffocation who really loves music ranging from death
metal to free jazz.andasfor the album, i hope to get it all finished and released sometime during this year
12. what kind of vocalist do you want to be and do you want to improve on your gutturals in any way?
i don't care for gutturals that much but i want to widen my vocal styles and be a vocalist that makes people recognize my existence and be recognized as a vocalist like for instance james Hetfield, David Vincent, and Max Cavalera.
thanks again for the interview anything you would like to add?
first off i want to thank fans from all over the world, seiji and WDsounds for supporting us and i want everyone to come to our shows and head bang, circle mosh, windmill and everything else people do and just enjoy yourself at our shows! and for sure girls too! haha
