Interview with Rick of Defleshuary

1. Hey rick.thanks for the intie.first of all tell us abrief history of defleshuary and the current line up too.and how did you come up with the bands name defleshuary?
I formed the band in summer of 2004. It was just a one man band, something to take up my time and take away boredom. I recorded a 7 song demo called Feasting on Torso. It was done with a drum machine and it was heavily influenced by Mortician. A couple of friends said they would be willing to join to make it a full band. Tim Ashley joined on drums and Kerm joined on bass, he would eventually switch over to guitar, and I (Rick Shirk) was on vocals/guitar. I ended up doing a 2nd demo with a drum machine titled You Could Wake Up Dead Tomorrow. We played a bunch of shows with this lineup. Finally in the spring of 2006 we entered Century Studios to record a 6 song demo with the full lineup. The demo went on to be titled Mutilated And Skinned Alive. It never saw an official release. Right after recording the demo Tim left. A friend of the band, David Bazow joined to play for us. Shortly afterwards John Linger joined on bass. The band finally had a complete lineup. While working on new songs a friend of the band who runs Homicide Watch Records (and sings for Methadone Abortion Clinic) said he would be interested in releasing the Mutilated demo on his label, but would want it to be longer. We went back to Century Studios and recorded 2 new songs. These 2 new songs were added to the official re-release of Mutilated and Skinned Alive. The full album is titled Zombie Plague, Rampant Horror. We still have the same lineup of me on vocals/guitar, Kerm on 2nd guitar, David Bazow on drums, and John Linger on bass.

The name Defleshuary came while I was at work one day. It was very slow and a co-worker friend and I were talking about some of the names death metal bands come up with and how a lot make up words. I jokingly said, yeah dude! I can do a band names, Deflesh-DEFLESHUARY And that terrible joke ended up being our band name. At least I know no one else has a band named Defleshuary since I made up the word haha.

2. The band sounds like dysentery for me.you guys are heavily influenced by guttural slamming bands right? describe the bands sound and tell us influence bands.
Dysentery is definitely an influence. When we started Mortician was a big influence. We've moved away from that sound as we progress more, still love the band though. Other influences would be Devourment, Putrid Pile, older Skinless, Beheaded, Abysmal Torment, and old Machine Head influenced me a lot.

3. The guitar sounds so chuggy and you creates tons of cool slow riffs.tell us your playing style and who influences you alot to come up with the current style? and what kind of gears do you guys use?
Basically all the bands I listed above have been a big influence. Earth Crisis was an early influence on my guitar playing. I'm learning all the time and practicing all the time, so I hope to continually get better.

For guitar gear I'm currently using a Digitech 2120 preamp and Kerm is using a Peavy 5150. For the recording we used the studios Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier. Next time we're gonna try our own heads to see if we can come up with an equally good sound.

4. Tell us about new stuff released recently.it includes old demo songs plus total three new songs right? they are pretty sick and i think you guys have progressed toward more sicker way than previous demo for sure.tell us how the bands sound changed since the demo and hows response to new stuff?
Yeah, our newest release as I said is called Zombie Plague, Rampant Horror. It was the 6 song demo we did re-released with 2 newly recorded songs written as the newest lineup. You can tell there's been a progression even from those first 6 songs to those last 2 new ones.

We're constantly pushing ourselves forward to make ourselves better. We've grown so much from that first demo Feasting on Torso. Listening to that demo is hard sometimes because how bad I think we sound back then haha. People seem to be digging our newest stuff and it's amazing to get such a positive feedback.

5. Your vocals in new songs got lower than ones in the demo for sure.so describe your vocals style and what bands can you compare your vocals with? and how do you try to improve yours for example getting them more lower and deeper than now?
I've been told I sound a bit like Shawn from Putrid Pile. I definitely take that as a compliment because his vocals rule. My vocals are lower on the 2 new songs. When we did the first 6 my health wasn't 100% and my vocals show it a tad. I was in top form when we did the new songs. I have no clue how to suggest improving your vocals to get them lower. Just practice, practice, practice is what I did. I've been singing along to death metal bands since middle school so I guess that helps.

6. As for slow parts ,you guys like to use slams and breakdowns right?whos main composer for those parts? and what bands did you learned alot how to create them from?
Yeah, we love slow chugging breaks. I write most of the material, but I've been encouraging everyone else to start writing for our next release. Devourment and Suffocation are the gods of big breakdowns in our world.

7. I just remember you played mortician style stuff in the beginning of the band.so what was your turning point to change to the current style? but the band still includes essences of mortician?
It wasn't really a certain point. I just started writing and newer sounds started coming out of me. I mean no offense to Mortician, but they're more of a raw simpler style of DM. Love em, but we've progressed a bit as a band and that's where our current sound is at. We're always going to keep pushing forward, but still remaining brutal. Also, Mortician will always be an influence to me.

8. What kind of releases do you have as of now? and tell us futures releases too.
Currently we have 2 demos Feasting on Torso and You Could Wake Up Dead Tomorrow. Both demos were done with a drum machine and I'm personally not a big fan of them. We also have our newest release out Zombie Plague, Rampant Horror. 8 songs of brutal awesomeness! Up next we have a track coming out on the DeathMetal.US compilation cd. It's not a new song though, Corpse You Up from the album.

We're currently writing new material. So I have 2-3 songs written. We're going to take it slow because we want this next album to destroy the last one.

9. What bands have you been into recently?
I've been loving the new Odious Mortem album, it's incredible! Fleshless, Gorod, Heinous Killings, Impure, Pathology, Porphyria, Saprogenic, and I've been on a huge Death kick lately.

10. Hows pa scene? ive heard about the scene is getting bigger.how about DM scene there? and i know there are tons of cool beatdown hard core bands.you listen to this kinda music and influenced by them at some points?
Our area seems to be growing finally. I live in a very small town, Lancaster , PA. Not a lot of DM going on here, but as I said it is growing. We've got some bands coming up, namely Age of Plague. Their new release is going to fucking destroy. Also, check out Hamilton Fish. They're more deathcore, but they could grow into something very nice.

11. thanks for the intie bro.tell us the bands future plan!! and any last words you would like to add?
Will do man! We very much appreciate this interview. Your webzine is awesome and you do an amazing job promoting the underground DM.
