Interview with Matti of Cryptic Abuse
1. hey matt give us a brief bio of the band cryptic abuse and why did you start a one man band? 5. what kind of gear do you use? and how does writing songs work? 7. i can hear some slams and breakdowns in the songs so are you the kind of person that cares about those parts when it comes to your music? and what do they mean to you or the band as a whole? 9. what bands have you been in to recently?
matt: well, last fall i decided to write a gore grind song. and i did, and i uploaded it to myspace the next month. after getting some good attention from that, i teamed up with dusk from harvist to record a demo. "gorrified". he did the programming. that demo is three songs and less than five minutes. after that, i lost inspiration for this project. i felt that it was pointless. then i realized it was just the genre of music i was playing. i couldn't get into playing short gore grind songs. so, in july i started writing new material, slamming death metal. i felt wonderful playing this new stuff and decided that was going to be my style from now on.
2. so how would you describe the bands sound and what are the bands strong points that other bands don't have and also, what bands can you compare your band with and what bands influence you?
matt: the band's sound is slamming death metal. and, as far as strong points go, i feel i'm just a talented person all around. i mean, i've heard bands and one man projects that suck worse than anyone and think they're the shit. i'm not saying i'm the best ever, and i'm not saying i'm ground breaking, i'm just saying that i've been playing guitar for nine years, and i know what i'm doing, i'm an exceptionally talented individual. my main influences for cryptic abuse are the obvious slamming bands, and some traditional death metal bands, i just love the genre more than anything and i love giving back to it.
3. your vocals are mainly gurgles right? what kind of vocals do you use besides those and who influences your vocal style?
matt: yes, my vocals are mainly gurgles. i also use high vocals in some songs to accent parts. now, in the beginning i used all traditional death metal vocals and only some gurgles , but it's a different sound now, and i think that the gurgles fit the music better. as far as influence goes, the first time i listened to inhuman dissiliency i thought those were the coolest vocals i'd ever heard, and finding more bands like that just pushed me into doing it, i love the sound, it just sounds gross.
4. as for the drum machine how did you learn to do drum programming? and do you prefer to use the machine rather than a human drummer?
matt: honestly, the only parts of my songs that are pre-programmed are the blasts and double bass beats. everything else i do by hand on the machine while recording into the computer. plus, i record ass backwards. i write and record the music first, without timing and then i do the drums, it just feels easier to me that way. i think that if i limit myself to writing to a pre-programmed beat on the machine i'm limiting myself. i like using the drum machine in this band because i can't play drums, but if i did i'd record them myself. i'd like to have a human drummer, but who knows, i'm happy doing this on my own.
matt: my gear is a red epiphone sg, a 50watt marshall combo amp, and my boss dr670 drum machine. i write songs on the guitar first, mixing riffs together to form a song, length isn't a big deal to me, as long as its over two minutes long. then i write lyrics and then the vocal patterning. then i record the guitar and vocals. then i do the drums.
6. the guitar sounds like inhuman dissiliency and corpse carving to me so what bands influence your playing style?
matt: yeah they're a huge influence on me (inhuman dissiliency), my playing style is influenced by a lot of bands, but they're a big one. i've been playing guitar for nine years.
matt: i like them a lot, but i dont like when bands do breakdowns that are just open notes over and over, like, metalcore or hardcore breakdowns. i like slams a lot more. they mean a great deal to me in my music because i think they drive the song mostly, just waiting for that one awesome part. even if its not a slam, everysong needs one awesome part.
8. is there any sick new bands in the ohio? recently heinous killings has been brutalizing the scene over there so is the scene getting better to a point of how it was years ago or no?
matt: my area of ohio sucks. it's all emo and metalcore here. the only good death metal bands close to me are my main band, gummas, and everything else is in pittsburgh. if you want death metal in ohio it's all closer to cleveland, but i'm on the east side of ohio and it sucks for metal.
matt: i have a huge cd collection, i'm constantly getting new shit. but right now i've been really into the new digested flesh/inhuman dissiliency split cd and the new guttural secrete cd. they've been in my player non stop.
10. what releases are you going to have and will you have any merch to go along with it? and what's the bands plan for the future?
matt: i'm finishing up relentless dismemberment, which is a five song ep. the drums are almost complete, then i'm waiting for brain f. from gutrot to do his guest vocals, then mixing/mastering. it'll be out at the latest in december in a pro-cdr format. with profit from that i'll be getting shirts, stickers, buttons and all that nifty shit. plans for the future? i have a split with penetrated planned, and maybe some other splits, you'll just have to wait and see!
ok any last words for our readers?
matt:i hope they're not my LAST words haha! i'm not gonna say keep it brutal, but just stay true to death metal, keep kicking ass, keep reading this webzine, and buy my cd when it's out!! thanks for the interview seiji!
