Interview with Dan and Ollie from Crepitation

1. hey dan and ollie, first off i just want to say i'm glad i get to introduce your band to our readers! so why don't we begin with you giving us a brief history of crepitation, and dan you are in infant bile as well so how did you hook up with ollie and the other members of crepitation?
Dan: Cheers for the interview man. Crepitation is a fairly new project. It started really with me wanting to play some slight more varied stuff than Infant Bile, stuff that wouldn't have really fitted in, plus IB was going pretty slowly and I had a load of ideas I just wanted to get out. I've known Ollie for a year or two and knew he was a really sick vocalist, Shane - I've known since my first band, and Matt is one of my oldest mates and is also in Infant Bile. Myself, Matt and Shane live within a mile of eachother and are all good mates so it made sense to jam together as we're all into similar stuff. Like I said - I'd known Ollie for a while and knew he had a sick voice on him, and then we decided to also get Paul in on vocals as I'd also known him for a while and we wanted to work together. By the way I should add that Infant Bile is NOT disbanded and this is not a replacement band, but something different.

Ollie: I'd like to add we've only really been active for a month so far, so I'd say it's more "very new" than "fairly new" haha.

2. crepitation has a lot of breakdowns like devourment and vomit remnants besides the technical stuff like disgorge and you also have two different vocal styling's with ollie doing the low inhale gutturals and paul doing high exhale gutturals. so what made you decide to do this style of music?
Ollie: Well musically slam death metal has become my passion in 2005, I come to love it more than any other type of metal. We started out with just me on vocals, then Paul joined the band shortly after which has added a lot more variation (and gives me a chance to take a breather during songs hahaha). Dan covered this one in the last question too I guess haha.

3. dan, when it comes to writing songs do you first create the riffs and use them as the basic line for songs? and for vocal parts how do the two vocalists make them?
Dan: I basically come up with a few riffs, and start to structure them. Then I jam them out with Shane and Matt, who both add their own riffs, I guess we kinda structure it as we write the riffs.

Ollie: Well first off there's no lyrics just yet. I am not sure whether we will write them or not though haha. Both me and Paul take the same approach really, we just do what we feel goes with the riffs hehe. And as a general rule for the vocals, Paul does them for the fast riffs, I do them for the more mid-paced ones and we both do them at the slams.

4. what kind of gear do you use?
Dan: I've recently bought a Jackson Kelly Pro, and I use a Line6 POD XT for recording. For live performances (if we do any) I've got a Marshall cab, and a homemade power amp.

Ollie: Nothing flashy at the moment haha, just a standard Peavey microphone into my PC :D

5. as for uk's brutal death scene which style is more popular, unique leader's blasting brutality or nydm and txdm's grooves? and any sick new bands you want to share with us?
Ollie: I'd say Unique Leader style really. Well you've already got a Bludgeon interview on the site hehe, and there's also Twitch of the Death Nerve who are on the 3-way split with Bludgeon. There's a band called Kastrated though who have a demo due very soon, they've got some great slammy riffs and they're cool guys.

6. are there any releases you are planning to release?
Dan: We've got some rough recordings and we'll be giving them out at gigs as a free and limited promo CD. Then we'll be re-recording and writing some new tracks with a much better sound and releasing a proper demo.

7. recently what bands and releases have you been into?
Dan: Woundeep's demos really impressed me. Also been playing Sarcolytic's MCD, and both Human Mincer albums recently. Some old school stuff too like Mythic and Desecration's latest album is pretty damn good too!

Ollie: I've been listening to Sect of Execration loads lately, I can't wait for their new stuff. I've been listening to Abysmal Torment - Incised Wound Suicide a lot lately in anticipation for their upcoming full-length. Same with Saprogenic, I'm dying for their new album.

8. do you guys or any of the other members have other projects?
Dan: Haha. Loads of them. I do vocals for Sarpanitum (blackened death metal), play guitar for a doom band called Imindain and have a few other projects on the side.

Ollie: I don't :(. but Shane has a band called After The Last Sky which is black/death/grind type stuff, and Dan's already said Matt is in Infant Bile.

9. dan what bands have influenced your current playing style?
Dan: Well, my Devourment worship is legendary, so obviously Devourment. Disgorge (US), Suffocation, Vomit Remnants and Sect of Execration are also influences.

10. and ollie what bands or singers in general have influenced your vocal style?
Ollie: Well, Jamie Bailey from Brodequin inspired me to do inhales, but big influences include Sect of Execration, Devourment, Disgorge (US), Dripping and Wormed.

11. what do you think about our jpdm scene? you've seen vomit remnants in london correct? and do you know of disconformity, rest in gore, and infected malignity?
Ollie: I'm pretty sure each member of the band was at the Stoke gig but I didn't know Matt then. Sarpanitum and After The Last Sky actually supported them, and because the Sarpanitum bassist/vocalist was away, Shane done some guest vocals to help the guys out. I totally love the JPDM scene, I can't wait for the three bands you mentioned to do full lengths too haha. Same with Woundeep too. Whatever happened to Glossectomy?

12. alright guys last question, tell us the bands future plan
Dan: Hopefully play some gigs, get some proper releases out, and drink some beers.

Ollie: Well, apart from Paul haha, he's not a drinker.

thanks bros! any comments you'd like to add?
Dan: Cheers for the interview, and cheers to anyone who's checked us out, kept in touch, and digs our tunes!

Ollie: And check out the new songs which will be coming very soon. They aren't about horses though hahaha
