Interview with Dav from Corpse of Christ

1. hey dav! finally corpse of christ has returned to the scene! why did you decide to come back? and give us a brief bio of the band and the current line-up!
DAV: First of, id like to say that the break up of Corpse of Christ back in 2003 was fueled by the lack of participation of other members...Also, I was somewhat discouraged because we played shows all over new england and %99.9 of the clubs we played didnt have the proper equipment to run a drum machine. Also, while were on the subject of drum machines, CoC's orginal drum machine (named steve) was actually stolen from me during a switch of apartments and was not returned to me. All the material for "molested by mormons" was lost so i had to start from scratch. What made me decide to resurect CoC was the fan mail i was getting and the constant demand for new material. So i asked brandon from BTK (drums) to play guitar for CoC and he agreed. So the current line up is Dav ~ guitars, programming, bass, vocals and Brandon ~ guitars, programming.

2. i saw on your myspace page in the bands that influence you section you put devourment and eternal suffering type brutal slamming death bands and i'm sure you definitely dig the grooves and slams of those bands but on the other hand do black metal bands like dimmu borgir, emperor, and cradle of filth influence the band's sound? describe the band's sound for us in your own words.
DAV: I started off into industrial music...other drum machine bands such as skinny puppy and kmfdm. I met JT (former singer of CoC) and he turned me on to other bands such as Dying Fetus, Devourment, Cinerary and some other brutal bands. I will say that if it wasent for Devourment's "molesting the decapitated" CoC would not exsist. I am a fan of black metal as well such as Emperor, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Funeral and actually CoC started off as a straight up black metal band.

3. recently you signed up with my friend alex's label inherited suffering records. how did you hook up with him? what do you think about the other bands on the label and the label itself?
DAV: Ive been taking to alex for quite some time now, ive known him for a while. He started out as a fan and when he started his label i was definatly interested. I found his label on myspace and thats how we hooked up. As for other bands on the label, god damn i love that infant jesus bukkakke band those guys are fucking sick but overall, id tour with any of the other bands on the label in a heartbeat.

4. if i'm not mistaken, you use a drum machine. so who does the drum programming and what drum machine bands do you learn from? and will there possibly be a human drummer in the band at some point?
DAV: I think if CoC was ever to play live again, it would have to be with a real drummer. Like i said before the clubs just dont have the right equipment to run a drum machine and have it sound decent. Other drum machine bands that have influenced me include skinny puppy, kmfdm, the cruxshadows, retch, stuff like that.

5. you get a chance to play any gigs? how do you dudes like playing gigs?
DAV: i have a love/hate relationship with playing out. and thats all because of the sound equipment problems of the clubs as i stated before.

6. what kind of gear do you guys use? and any guitarist's that have influenced you to create brutal riffs for corpse of christ?
DAV: I play a modified ESP F-200. I had 3 guitars at one point but got rid of them all when i bought the ESP. Good action, Great price definatly well worth it. When it comes to vox, definalty a shure kinda guy. And Boss drum machines and samplers all the way.

7. when it comes to writing songs how does that work?
DAV: hahah sometimes, it doesnt. but in all seriousness i usually write one riff at a time and then program the drums to each riff. but since brandon has joined the band, we just take turns writting shit.

8. what bands and releases have you been into recently?
DAV: TYAG, Devourment, The number 12 looks like you, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ion Dissonence, Cephalic Carnage, into the moat, i want to kill you, ed gein, Meshuggah

9. how's the scene in your state of Massachusetts? any sick new bands? and what states scenes catch your attention? and have you checked out our japanese scene? disconformity, rest in gore, and infected malignity are some sick guttural bands from japan!
DAV: Ive heard some of the bands out of japan and have seen some videos...really brutal shit! Like Glossectomy i havent heard infected malignity but judging by the name i like em already. The scene in mass currently is run by emo/hardcore bands and whatnot but massachusetts has been known to be pretty open minded about music...as for other bands i like in mass theres not many but id have to say Deathempetine, Samara (good black metal band), and terminally, your aborted ghost.

10. what's your opinion on the importance of the different parts of death metal? like the guttural vocals, or the slam riffs and blast beats and etc.
DAV: Now i can see the genre is heading in a new direction. Now it seems to be blending sick mosh riffs with blast beats and shit like that and now some of the newer grindcore bands coming out have really perfected being just a mix of everything crazy. If its one thing i love in a band its mulit-tone vocals and just audio chaos.

11. tell us what releases you have out now and what you'll release in the future.
DAV: CoC has released Molded Maccaroni (a rare 2 song demo on cassette, only 50 were made) Scars of Stigmata (paid $500.00 for that when i could of recorded it better for free) and Molested By Mormons which was never relased because my drum machine was stolen. As for the title of the new release due out in early 06, it hasent been named yet.

12. what's the band's plan for the future and the main goal of corpse of christ's sound?
DAV: me personally, id like to tour with a national death metal band but mostly i just want to put out a really brutal offensive cd that i could be proud of.

thanx dav! any comments you would like to add like plugs or shout-outs and etc?
DAV: id like to say thanks to all the fans, zines, and anyone else who has supported us from the begining! thanks to alex, thanks to other brutal DM bands for the inspiration, thanks to massachusetts and check out our other band Bind, Torture, Kill @ www.bindtorturekillonline.com
