Interview with Tom from Corpse Carving

1. hey tom! thanks for granting me this interview with you for corpse carving. you had a sick one man band named In sufferance before starting corpse carving correct? what motivated you to start corpse carving with other members? a one man band didn't satisfy you? and how is corpse carving sound different from In sufferance's sound?
Hey Seiji, Yeah, In Sufferance is truly dead and buried nowdays, it was bascially my first real attempt at making metal, Looking back on it nowdays it makes me rather embarrased, but you have to start somewhere. In the years leading upto Corpse Carving I was involved in numerous little bands that never got very far in the initial stages, the Approach was always wrong and I got reasonably Fed up with it all and this was pretty much my motivation, I did Originally start Corpse Carving as a Solo Project but i fucked my throat on a demo recording and needed the vocals done so I asked a Mate to do them and he basically joined the band after that and thus the band was properly formed so a One man band would've been satisfying but I wouldn't have been able to play shows and such which is one of the coolest sides of it. As for the sound I think Corpse Carving is just more Strippped Back, Less trying to be technical and just being true to your own style of playing.

2. corpse carving is an ultra sick guttural slam style band and it has elements of, goregrind, brutal death and etc. all of corpse carving's song's are short like around the one minute range and there all like that not just a certain few so that's an awesome mix up from what were normally used to when it comes to length. what bands influence you to come up with the band's sound? and describe the band's sound in your own words!
Well, there has never, not once been a moment where I've thought I want to be like this band, or like that band, I guess all the stuff I regulary play in my cd player coagulates an over all feeling in me that comes out whenever I sit down to write new tunes, With regard to the song lengths, I've never really given it a thought,I guess you could say I refuse to write anything to fit a certain rule, I'll just write, if it turns out to be 1 minute, then it's 1 minute.. if it's 10 minutes, then wicked, it's 10 minutes. There's seriously no Concious thought put into it.

3. you guys use a drum machine do you think it's sicker and more brutal than a human drummer? what thing's do you look to do when coming up with the drum programming to create such sick slam style songs, and what band's do you learn how to do this from? and any favorite bands that use a drum machine like inhuman dissiliency for instance?
Inhuman Dissiliency are awesome, that's for sure, and and and, I'm not just saying that because Shawn will probably see this interview!!! haha. It's funny though that you ask this question, because just 1 month ago... we Got rid of the Drum Machine and a Local Sick as shit Drummer Joined the band to add the Human element that was lacking. You see I only started with a Drum Machine because at the time, there was no drummers willing, capable or available to be a part of it and it came with advantages, like being able to jam at 1 in the morning in your parents house because you can turn the volume down and shit like that. When Programming Drums for the previous Corpse Carving Tracks I tried to approach it as if it was being played by a drummer, putting in alot of intricate drum fills and trying to avoid looping the same beat for more then 1 bar to make it seem more Involved, I myself play real drums, not very well, but enough to be able to program out drums off my own knowledge of drumming... and revisiting the parts of songs that have stuck in my head for years to get ideas. Bands that use Drum Machines I enjoy.. well the list is long so I'l speel off some good choices, Retch, Bludgeon, Twitch of the Death Nerve, Putrid Pile (even tho I believe the cymbals are real), Inhuman Dissiliency, VOlatile, Goreopsy, Cryptophilia, MORTICIAN, Phalogore, Purulent, Differ Nom Basta, Necrophagist (on the cd Onset of Putrefaction only) and Splattered Cavities..

4. you create tons of cool slam riffs so are there any favorite guitarist's that have influenced you to make them? and what do you try to do to improve the band's sickness wise as the guitarist? ultra down tuned guitar riffs, tons of cool slam parts or etc?
ummm... There hasn't really ever been any individual guitarists that I can think of that have influenced my playing. All I do is make everything sound like what I'd want to hear in another band..I enjoy alot of Chunk and Chug and The Lower the guitar the better... Buying 70 Gauge Guitar string sets and tuning to G# is bascially what we do nowdays, we feel that is as low as we can take it, it's still definable, yet the pitch is still guttural to match up with the vocals..

5. recently you released a three way split cd with bludgeon and twitch of the death nerve. those bands from uk are sick so how did this release come about? and what releases will you have for the near future?
Well, We were talking to another band about making a 4 way split cd with all just drum machine bands, the other band got Bludgeon involved who got Twitch of the Death Nerve Involved and then the initial band we were talking to pulled out... and then there was 3.. bands left!! All the bands that are on the split are sick. Well we just brought out our Debut Full Length Album on Despise the Sun Records, it has 24 brand spanking new brutal tunes, un-interrupted non stop gore!!

6. what kind gear do you guys use? and when writing songs, how does that work?
It's all Bascially run of the mill stuff, we don't have fancy expensive Rack mounted units and huge stacks and stuff, although it'd be good, that stuff just costs money we don't have!!! I use now a Cort X-6 Series guitar, Korg Toneworks Multieffects and a DOD Fx7 and Whatever amp and head unit are available at the gigs!!!!, Pope the bassist uses an Ibanez SR405 5 String Bass, D'adarrio strings and I think a warwick Quad IV 400w Head Unit and Ashton Quad Box... For the Drum Machine (which we don't use anymore) I used a Yamaha Psr220, Logic Platinum 5.1.1 and a run of the mill Midi Interface.. and Later I used Self Concealed Drum Library with LM4-M2 to produce the drums. I've been keepin the drum programming shit "asecret" for years, dunno why... it became fun to do I think haha. With Song Writting and how that works.. well.. it's fucked. I get random spurts at unknown times and just sit down and end up with a bunch of new tracks, nothing is forced, when it happens it happens, which could be bad one day when it just doesn't come.. then I guess we'll split up hahaha. The Songs just appear in my head and all I have to do is take them out and put them on paper. Bam!!!! Waaazzaaam!! it's so easy it's scary. lol.

7. you also have a band named decaying form and you signed with dan's crypt so i'm guessing it's a one man project? tell us about that band's sound and are there any other bands you have? and how's cranial devourment now?
Well.. Decaying Form I spose' is a One man Project but I utilize the drumming ability of Linton (current CC drummer) and Ed Kube (old CC vocalist) to get that band working.. The Band is very similiar to Cranial Devourment, as in Random-Chaotic-unstructured music, just designed to be extreme in a different fashion then vulgarly heavy, as it's a very high tuned sounding album...The thing with it that ties it to Cranial Devourment is the Fact that it' 100% Improvised which I find extremely interesting.. It's spontanious and I think that's what works for the Decaying Form's Sound. Cranial Devourment on the other hand has been "dead" since the beginning of 2005 after Uffe quit, which tends to happen when your band members are spread across the globe.. I do have plans to pick it back up and I'm waiting for things to roll in getting all the tracks finally released and available.. It'll happen, but when.. We'll see haha!! Besides that I don't have any other projects that are Ready to speak about, there's a few in the pipe works.. many numerous solo projects I wish to pursue different genres in.. but for now.. they remain undeveloped!!

8. besides creating music you are a well known artist. you draw cover arts, band logos by way of pc and get websites up for bands and labels so you definitely are a big supporter of the scene. tell us a bit about that in depth for those who don't know this information and what other artists your into like for example mike majewski, jon zig, or toshiro egawa?
Well for a few Years now I've been doing all those things you mentioned, it originally started off as a hobby to help support the local scene and bands.. but after a while I started offering International people free websites just to keep myself occupied and it just snowballed from there with people willing to help me out with money/merch for my help, I've always kept my prices and shit Cheap as fuck and mainly work for Merchandise just because I've been doing it for the Love of Metal not for money n shit. I started a small independant Buisness you could say called "Putrid Display Multimedia" and up to that point I never put my art services out for tender, I just did websites only and I was surprised how many people showed a genuine interest in my work and how many cool job offers and awesome people I got to meet and work for thru this avenue!!! It's been a fun occupation for many years.. but now.. I am putting an End to the work in order to take sometime off as it became a 7 day a week job. But I will be doing Gore Art just to vent that Need to express pure filthy Butchery!!.
Other Artists I like.. So Many from Metal artists to non Metal artists.. I won't load a full list here because you'd need to much space on the site for it... SHO (T.egawa) Is especially one of my favourite artists, such intricate detail and so smooth.. Perfection is every piece I see of his work!! Majewski should do a series of Ultimate Gore comics.. Fuck he can draw!! and Jon Zig.. I so want a tattoo from that sicko!!

9. any gigs or fest's planned for the near future? i'm sure the fans always go crazy in the pits for you right? how's the response to you when you guys play gigs? and are you used to playing with a drum machine?
At this stage we only have idea's for tours but nothing locked in.. we're so caught up in just getting the set to the right length with our new drummer so we can organise these things! We are Use to playing a Drum Machine but it's going to be so much more fun to play live with a real person on drums!! haha.. As for the Pits.. well we don't get them here.. not for us anyway.. Most people just stand around and look.. the responses we've had at our small amount of gigs have been varied.. when went Interstate to play with Fuck I'm Dead the crowd didn't take to our music at all.. also I heard on the night we sounded like fucking shit.. hahaha. I recon people would go off more if it wasn't for the fact that there is no Drummer up there going off there tits and if you stand at the front you can't here the drum machine because it's coming out the front of house PA. We'll continue to gig.. maybe someday we can play in Europe to massive hordes ready to cut sick!! Dream!!!

10. vocal's are really important for this kind of music and i think chris quince the vocalist's vocals really fit the band's sound perfectly. which does he like exhale gutturals or inhale gutturals? and do you know any of his favorite vocalists he learned from?
Quince actually left the band in Feburary 05' which we didn't take to kindly to as his vocals fitted our sound perfectly and he was so fucking powerful on stage, all his vocals were Exhaled and I wish I could name who got influenced by.. but I just don't know bro.. sorry.

11. how's the scene in australia? any sick new bands like corpse carving?
The Scene In Australia Seems to be holding steady, I myself am not well educated on the Mainland Australian Metal scene as I never go there, but here in Tasmania the scene waves around, There'll be months that go past without any word of gigs and activity and then in 2 months there will be heaps of shows and alot happening, new cd's, bands travelling abroad etc.. My Local scene in Tasmania (launceston) is pretty much dead with most metal heads leaving the town or being to occupied with jobs and family to be able to help the scene with gigs etc.. I hope it picks up soon as I miss playing locally!!!
I'll name 2 bands to keep an Eye out for!!!
1. Mephistopheles - A band of young genius's, Tight technical brutal death metal from Tasmania, really good stuff and they should have a cd out very soon!!
2. The Ocularis Infernum - These guys are from Melbourne and play a very high-end style of diverse metal, Brutal, Gore, Melodic, hardcore all in 1 song, very sick shit!!! They have a Promo out very soon.. worth hunting down!!

12. what bands have you been into recently?
Vomit Remnants (as per usual), Offal Stench (killer New Zealand Slam style band), Akercocke, Gorefuck (re-found love), Malignancy (new promo kills!!), Miscreation, Digested Flesh and Pukelization (killer jap!!)

13. i know you are a big fan of jpdm bands and i know you are good friend's with vomit remnants correct? any bands from japan you want to mention about?
That's Correct!! We want to play Japan more then anything and hope to actually be there sooner then you think ;)!!!! PUKELIZATION RULE!!! Love there shit, Infected Maliginity, Woundeep, Baked Bomb, Throb of Offal, Bowel!!!! there's many more but some I can't find music for.. like One Last Victim! Anyone got some.. send??? haha. :)

14. corpse carving is one of the bands that influence the scene a lot like devourment for instance. some of my friends from bands say one of their influence's is corpse carving. so we will keep an eye on corpse carving's future haha! tell us the band's main goal!
Our Main Goal is to keep things together and continue making Carving of Extreme Brutality for years to come and hopefully naturally evolve into something unaubiable due to it severe sickness!!!! And To Survive!!

15. ok last questions here dude, what do gutturals and slam parts mean for you and the band? and why did you start to listen to this kind of music?
not for everyone, but for some I think the essence of the word slam says it, The parts of songs that when they kick in you're just filled with the need to pound things, the adrenalin starts to flow and you get fired up, it physhically effects you.. which is good.

ok thanks again tom i really appreciate you granting me this interview. any comments or shout out's or plugs you want to add?
Only that I want a Kirin Ichiban... I've never had one before! Thanks for the Interview mate, the Support is much appreciated and good luck in the future with your Zine, Glad to see it up and running!! Stay Sick and Putrid, Raise the Underground!!! Carve some fucking Corpses and Send us the Photos for our next album cover!!!!!!!!!!!

Chow!!!!!
