Interview with Angel from Cephalotripsy
1. hey angel i'm happy to hear that you finally got your new band Cephalotripsy started off! you are also in a sick guttural band named condemned and forrest the drummer from condemned is also in cephalotripsy with you. so how did you guys hook up with the other members and start this band? and give us the current line up.
Nick (Cephalotripsy guitarist) was looking for a drummer and a vocalist for his project. Nick and Forrest were introduced at a show through a mutual friend and agreed to meet up and try out some of Nick's material, Nick liked what Forrest had to offer and then had Forrest ask me if I would want to do something outside of Condemned. I was sceptical at first because Condemned was my main priority, but once I heard Cephalotripsy's material, I was shocked by the sheer brutality of it and decided to give it a shot. They both thought my vocals were a perfect fit and we've been devouring infants ever since. The current line-up consists of me on vocals, Nick Ochs on guitar, and Forrest Stedt on drums.
2. the band has plenty of devourment styled breakdowns but what bands can you compare your band's sound with? describe the bands sound in detail and why did you guys decide to start this guttural slamming style of music?
I would compare us to bands like Devourment, Artery Eruption, Orchidectomy, etc. Our sound is basically the most brutal shit we can possibly write, whether it be the disgusting gurgles, crushing slam riffs, or gravity blasts, we want to stand out as the most insanely brutal band anyone has ever heard. We all felt that we needed a band that was 100% disgustingly brutal, and Cephalotripsy is the product of that.
3. you have some killer gutturals dude, so what vocalists influence your current vocal style? and do you use the same style of gutturals in condemned and Cephalotripsy ? and which do you prefer inhale or exhale gutturals?
Thanks alot, the vocalists that influence me are: Matti Way, Levi Fuselier, Shawn Whittaker, Wayne Knupp, and Ruben Rosas. As far as the differences between Condemned and Cephalotripsy go, the patterns I use for Condemned are generally quicker, whereas the patterns I use for Cephalotripsy are slower and more guttural. Although I prefer to hear both inhales and exhales, I can only gurgle while exhaling.
4. as i said before Cephalotripsy uses some cool devourment styled breakdowns, so who creates those breakdown parts first? is it nick the guitarist or do you also throw ideas around
Nick had the first few songs written on guitar before we were together as a band, so those are mostly his ideas you hear on the demo. But now we are writing stuff together and everyone throws in ideas.
5. what kind of gear do you guys use?
I use an AKG mic, Nick plays a BC Rich beast, a Pod XT, and runs that out of the p.a.. Forrest plays a Premier drum set w/ a Pork Pie snare, Paiste cymbals, Iron Cobra pedals, Roland bass drum trigger and an Alesis DM5 module.
6. who came up with the band logo its so cool and sick! do you think the band logo is important to give people a sick image of the band?
Steve (Condemned guitarist) drew up the logo and gave it to Nick, who added some of his own details to it. I think a bands logo says alot about them, having a sick logo is one of the most important things outside of the music itself.
7. what releases and bands have you been into recently? and have you found any new bands like say from myspace or something. that sites getting big for finding new music.
The new Disgorge, Insidious Decrepancy, Retch, Artery Eruption, Purid Pile, Devourment, Orchidectomy, and Disconformity. I have discovered alot of sick bands through myspace, bands like: Hacking Sinewage, Embryonic Devourment, and Chainsaw Abortion.
8. how's the scene in california? i imagine most of the bands try to play technical stuff like disgorge but there's bands who sound like devourment and artery eruption correct?
The scene in California is constantly growing, I would say there is a good mixture of shit going on right now. I'd like for there to be more death-grind going on in the San Diego area, but in time im sure that'll happen.
9. what are the bands plans for the near future like gigs, releases and etc?
We are playing some local shows pretty soon but we're not planning on releasing an album until winter.
10. are you are interested in our jpdm scene? have you listened to disconformity, rest in gore, infected malignity and etc? and do they influence you in some way?
Yeah, Im into the JPDM scene, Disconformity is one of the sickest bands I've heard in a while, they definitely influence me alot, their vocal patterns are some of the most brilliant one's I've heard.
thanks bro!!!! any comments you would like to add?
Fuck yeah, look out for shit coming out of San Diego, check out our myspace for merch and shows.
