1. hey clay what's up man? first of all give us a brief bio of your one man band cemetery rapist and why did you decide to start this band?
.....I was without a band for awhile, I went and saw Putrid Pile at the metalfest here in town and said fuck it. I had never played guitar or seen a drum machine in my life, I went with it and you have what you hear right now.
2. the band sounds like a more faster version of putrid pile and some of the guitar work reminds me of lividity so tell us a bit about the abnds sound in your owns words
.....Well I have a hard time comparing myself to other bands, thats what I love about the grind genre...no two sound alike! I play fast and I play fuckin brutal and thats just it I guess. Fav. one man bands, shit, the list is never ending. Putrid Pile obviously, Shaun is the sickest...there are a lot of other drum machine bands like Surgery, Pile of Human Mush...shit man, I don't even know right now, I'm drunk as fuck.
3. its hard to handle all parts by your self.you dont recruite other members to get the lineup complete or you wanna do everything without interfernece? and as for drummachine what bands have you been learned from?? plus when it comes to creating songs ,that works in particular order?
I do everything myself, people tend to get in my way...I know what I want and I'm gonna get it, simple as that. I didn't really learn from anyone either...I went and bought one and sat down, by myself, and learned how to program it AND play guitar; I guess that's why I have a distinct sound different from others.
I usually make the guitar parts first, drums over it and then of course they both even themselves out so....yeah....vocals last although I usually come up with the song name BEFORE I even make the song.
4. your vocals are guttural as fuck and it fits the sound of the band perfectly! so what vocalists influenced your current vocal style? and do you use inhale or exhale gutturals?
All my vocals are exhale, NO EFFECTS. I hate that shit...
I heard a real underground band called Pile of Human Mush and a 16 year old from Surgery and the garggle sound I really liked. You can't hear it much on the demo but the new release cumming out in July you can hear it well...its more like a violent vomit sound and I am very happy with it.
5. do you prefer grooves and breakdowns in songs or do you prefer to go the blasting route?
I like to blast insane and once I've fried everyones brain I break in with the groove just to finish stomping their face in...that's usually how I roll sucka.
6. as for the guitar parts i mentioned above the guitar reminds me a bit of lividity so do you have any favorite guitarists that influence you to come up with your current style?
Well, like I said I sat down by myself pretty much and just learned. I can say that bands like Lividity me a lot with their straight forward "fuck the tech, play BRUTAL" approach to things. Really I don't think I'm that good of a guitarist, there are a ton of dudes that can slay twice as good as me, but I can say I play motherfucking fast as shit...I guess thats my strongpoint.
7. what kind of gear do you use? and what instruments (including vocals) do you like to play the most?
Marshall cab, Washburn Guitars, Alesis drum machine...NO EFFECTS ON VOCALS, that's all me muthafucka! I'll walk around the house all day doin vocals in my head to whatever beat is in my head....but I can honestly say that I like playing my actual drums a lot. I played drums in bands before Cemetery Rapist and those are easy to just sit and jam on...but there is no substitute for some brutal vokills.
8. what bands have you been into recently and how's the Illinois scene as of late? i haven't really heard that many newer bands coming out of Illinois that were very good until your band came along.
Bands in Illinois? heh, good luck...there aren't many...there are a few in Chicago but I don't really know, I listen to mostly underground grind and I can honestly say I'm pretty much it. I've been listening to a bunch of shit really, Pile of Human Mush, Excretion, hell even some new Cannibal Corpse. Some buddies projects, shit....drinkin a big glass of whiskey, and just jam out.
9. recently you finished your first demo so is it available yet or what? and what releases will you have for the near future?
The demo, Violate the Decomposing, is sold out! I will most likely re-release it in like...two years or something, but yeah. I got some splits cumming out but look out for my CD in July entitled CUM GUZZLING CORPSES!!! I usually hate listening to my own tunes but this shit slays, comes out JULY 1ST!!!
10. do you have any side projects or are you concentrating on cemetery rapist a hundred percent?
Nah, it's all Cemetery Rapist...any "side projects" I do will all be under the Cemetery Rapist name. For instance, I'm looking into doing some harsh noise tracks, instead of making a new project I'll just keep it in house...get the Rapist word out to as many people as possible.
11. there's some one man bands in the scene like putrid pile, insidious decrepancy, syphilic and etc. but what does your band have that these others don't?
Well, for one Syphilic is sick...big ups to Brian!
The other thing is I play live. Putrid Pile does to but, as far as I'm concerned, none of us would be here without Shaun so....he's on a level all by myself. But for me, I put on a full on stage show. Banners, intros, plus I go INSANE...other than that my music blasts, but I'll let the tunes speak for themselves.
12. ok one more question, what are your plans for the future? you want to start playing shows or fests or anything?
I got a ton of shows I'm playin, just check the myspace. I'm playing CIM here in my hometown put on by Matt Bishop (yeah yeah!). I'll continue to gig and play any fest I can.
