Interview with Justin and Todd of Abacinate
1. hey bro! thanks for the intie.im always happy to check out new bands coming out of new jersey.so first off tell us the bands history of abacinate and the current line up. 6. tell us what kind of gears you guys use? 9. you guys have other projects?
Todd: This band was formed out of a few other projects that didn't exactly work out. the current line up has been solidified since February of 2005. We have never worked under this moniker with a different line up. We started playing out and released our first demo in the summer of 2005. We self released our EP in winter of 2006 and we had recently signed a two record deal with Epitomite Productions, which will be a split CD with NY band GODROT and the other will be our full length, which should be out later this year.
2. the bands sound so diverse.the band sounds so many patterns like beatdowns, grinding, melodic parts and etc.so how did you guys come up with the current sound? and what bands influence you guys?
Justin: We all have different styles and different musical tastes. Most of the time we write our music individually and when we meet up at our rehearsal studio, we'll show riffs to each other to put the songs together. There are millions of bands that influence us, but if we had to pick a few that influence the way we write music, it would definitely be Dying Fetus, Deicide, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Lamb of God, The Red Chord, Lividity, Morbid Angel, Deadwater Drowning, Skinless, Cephalic Carnage, Macabre, The Black Dahlia Murder, Pantera, Prayer for Cleansing, Cryptopsy, Decapitated, Suffocation, Manowar
3. as i said, you guys use cool beatdowns parts sometimes remind me of other beatdown hard core bands. with that, you guys are influenced by other NJ brutal death bands like dripping, waking the cadaver, digested flesh as for slam and beatdown parts?
Justin: We listen to so many bands with beatdown parts. Being a band from New Jersey, its only natural that we play them. I'm not sure how we are influenced in that department. I think that when we play beatdown parts, we just attempt to be as heavy as possible, but also try to keep it interesting. A lot of bands play breakdowns and if its not done sweet, it could get boring. I guess you could say that any bands that we enjoy listening to would influence our writing style.
4. vocals are really varied.you guys use hard core screams, gutturals and squeals.especially your squeals remind me of waking the cadaver.describe your vocals and what bands influence your vocals style?
Todd: Bands that influence our vocalist? Definitely Deicide, Dying Fetus, Lividity, Six Feet Under, old Cannibal Corpse, and Pantera.
5. as for guitar sound, theres both fast and techy riffs and heavy and slow riffs at the same time.besides them theres more guitar parts.describe guitar sound and what bands influence it alot?
Todd: As far as technique and style of playing slayer, lamb of god, black dahlia, and unearth and probably the main influences..but the writing style is a little more in the vein of death metal and hardcore.. I guess..the reason it works out that way is because we all grew up playing with different musicians and with different musical backgrounds. All of us have some overlapping areas of musical interest but we still have different tastes. Basically I think we all approach our instruments with a different style and technique but for some reason we all play and write really well together..I think it's just good chemistry
How much time ya got buddy?
Justin: Well, I use Mapex drums, Gibraltar Hardware (drum rack, stands, kick pedals), Tama piccolo snare, Aquarian drum heads, and Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, and Wuhan cymbals. I just recently started using a Ddrum kick trigger through a Roland sampler pad. I used Axis longboard pedals for a few months, but I didn't like them too much.
Todd: Brian plays an Ibanez RG through a Crate solid state head (not sure what model), and a Randall 4x12 warhead cab. His backup guitars are an ESP Eclipse and a Gibson SG. He also uses a Boss NS-2 noise suppressor and a Boss Chromatic Tuner. EMG pickups, Dunlop picks, DR Strings, Dimarzio straps.
Mat plays a 69 Fender Jazz bass, with a maple precision bass neck through an Ampeg SVT-III head, and a 2x15 Ampeg cabinet. He also plays an Ernie Ball Musicman bass and an Ibanez Soundgear bass, depending on what mood he's in.
7. tell us new jerseys scene.i think theres alot beatdown styled hard core bands and guttural slamming brutal death bands.so both scene has good connection and influence each other?
and any new sick bands worth mentioned?
Justin: The New Jersey hardcore scene has been big for a pretty long time. Lately, the bands don't have venues to play at anymore, since they are either closing down or just won't book them anymore. NJ is known for good brutal death metal, too. I'd say our band falls somewhere in between the two, but we are probably considered to be more of a death metal band.
We know a lot of bands around Jersey. Check out: The Grieving Process, Slaughterhouse Five, Waking The Cadaver, So I Shot Myself, An Aborted Memory, East of the Wall, At Rest, Suffer The Living, Nag Hamadi (RIP), Sycamore Dreams, Gutwrench VBC, Danny Tanner, Float Face Down, FM Theory. I know I'm forgetting a lot, but those are off the top of my head.
8. what releases do you have and how are future releases?
Justin: Well, I think we already mentioned this in the first question, but we released an EP in 2006 called Portrayal of the Grey Man. Before that, we were on a few compilation CDs and we recorded demos that we gave away for free. We are in the process of writing our full length record, which will be out in late 2007 on death metal label: EPITOMITE (www.epitomite.com), as well as a split CD, which is due for an early May 2007 release.
Justin: Yeah, we do have some side projects Ian and I have a band with Nick from Waking the Cadaver called CorpseBanger. (www.myspace.com/corpsebangernj) We'll be recording some stuff later this year. I'm also in another band with Todd with a couple of our good friends. That band doesn't have a name yet. The music is not straight up metal, but I guess I'd have to describe the style as "Experimental."
10. what bands have you been into recently?
Justin: I think we mentioned a ton of bands in one of the last questions. We're into all kinds of shit man. All kinds of ridiculous death metal, grind, gore, thrash, etc
11. tell us the bands plan and add any last words.
Thanks for the interview, Seiji ,keep it real HAIL AND KILL!!
