Interview with Steve of Atrocious Abnormality
1. hey steve thanks for taking the time out for this interview i'm glad to introduce your new band Atrocious Abnormality to our readers. you're also the guitarist of lust of decay and you run comatose music and if i'm not wrong the other members brent and james have also been in some other bands as well so first off, tell us how you hooked up with these guys and how did the band start? 8. what kind of gear do you use?
Thanks for this interview... this is the first one ever for Atrocious Abnormality! We started back in February of 2006, me and the drummer Brent had been talking about starting a band for probably about six months or so before we ever got started. I told him I wanted to wait till my other band Lust of Decay finished recording our latest CD before beginning the new band. So finally we got together and began writing music. James joined the band pretty much right from the start too. He was a good friend of Brent and is also in the band Apotheosys.
2. i heard from brent that you are all influenced by a lot of bands with a similar type of style like Decrepit Birth, Vile, Devourment, Cinerary, Gorgasm and stuff like that which all have guttural vocals and fast riffs mixed with slamming breakdowns so describe the bands sound in your own words and how is it different from lust of decay?
Yes, we are all heavily influenced by those bands. In some ways it is different than Lust of Decay, yet in some ways very similar. I would say Atrocious Abnormality has more technical riffs than Lust of Decay, especially some of the bass runs. The vocals are pure guttural with no highs at all, and the drumming is certainly more straight forward. But when it comes to the slam riffs they are more similar to the ones I write for Lust of Decay... guess that is just my writing style. But we are trying to create a band that does not sound like a clone of LOD.
3. how did you come up with your current playing style and how is your playing style and the riffs you use in atrocious abnormality differnt from what you do in lust of decay?
Just self taught over the years. Started out playing a lot of punk and thrash metal in the early years and all that has kind of worked into my brutal death metal style I create now. I guess the way I play between the two bands does not differ a whole lot, it is just playing with the different musicians that make it sound unique from LOD.
4. generally how does writing songs work? and how does the other members skills fit into the overall sound of the band?
I usually write the riffs, I have a general idea where I want to go with them, then me and Brent will construct them into a song. Unfortunately James can not practice with us every time, so we have not really got to work with any of his riffs yet, but he has some killer ones waiting to be played! Right now we only have four songs wrote, so we still have quite a few more songs to write before we can enter the studio for a recording.
5. i can tell you really dig breakdowns so what do they mean to you personally as a musician?
There is no real meaning behind the breakdowns other than wanting to crush some heads, haha!
6. what releases will you have in the near future? i'm sure they'll all be released on comatose music right?
We certainly plan to have a full length CD out by the end of the year and it will be on Comatose Music. We have no title for this CD yet, it is still some time before this will be ready.
7. how's the scene in north carolina are there any sick new guttural bands we should check out? i remember brent had flesh casket so what's up with that band?
The scene here is pretty lame, some cool bands to check out is Apotheosys, Cesspool of Vermin, Malebolgia... I think Brent's Flesh Casket project is on hold at the moment, but I am sure he will get it rolling again soon.
My Jackson guitar mostly (sometimes my Washburn Dimebag guitar)... Crate cabinets, Mos Valve amplification, ART 32 band EQ, and a Digitech RP 300 floor pedal processor for distortion.
9. you are not only the guitarist but your also the vocalist so which do you prefer inhale or guttural vocals? and what vocalists influence your current guttural style? did you learn from lust of decays vocalist jay?
No inhales, just pure gutturals. I do like inhales, but too hard to do live cause you can not hear them good without cupping the mic. And I can not cup the mic and play guitar at the same time, haha! I really do not have a particular favorite vocalist... I like the vocals a lot on Cinerary, Mutilated, Vomit the Soul, Devourment, Aversion to Life... the real guttural shit like that.
10. what kind of sound do you want atrocious abnormality to have in the future? you plan to evolve or like the old saying goes "if it ain't broke don't fix it"?
Just pure brutal fucking death metal the way we like it! No more and no less!
11. what bands have you been into recently? do you listen to any japanese bands like disconformity, rest in gore and etc? and how's the response to our japanese bands in usa?
I listen to so much stuff now that I run a record label it is crazy! I really dig Disconformity, Vomit Remnants, and Infected Malignity a lot. I have not yet heard Rest in Gore, but I imagine it is sick!
12. what's the bands plans for the future?
To release a CD later this year and hopefully set up some USA tours and see how things go from there... maybe even hit overseas someday! Check us out at www.myspace.com/atrociousabnormality. Thanks for the interview and good luck with your zine!
