Interview with Mike of Blunt Force Abortion
1. hey mike thanks for doing this interview, so first off tell us how blunt force abortion started and what's the current line up?
Blunt force abortion started as an idea about a year ago. it wasnt until about 4 months ago that i started writing songs and making drum beats. the band right now consists of only me and scott.
2. the band sounds like a mix between slamming guttural death metal and grindcore with a lot of breakdowns so for me the band sounds pretty original and unique. so in your opinion what do you think about your music and what bands can you compare the band with?
I love the way our music sounds. we had a pretty simple goal when writing the songs...to be as brutal as possible and not dick around with "filler riffs". I think we sound a lot like implosive disgorgence because they have a similar atmosphere about their music.
3. scott use gurgles right? does he use any other kind of vocals and who influences his vocal style?
Scott is fucking amazing at vocals. That guy can do a whole variety of screes and rees, vomit vocals, and pretty much any extreme sound that me or him can think of. He gets alot of his influence from circle of dead children.
4. as for breakdowns you said devourment and cephalotripsy influence the band a lot right? so how do you evolve those bands styles and create your own?
Well devourment is a pretty big band on the death metal scene, and it would almost be blasphemous to not mention them as an influence. I think about devourment alot when i'm writing songs, trying to figure out a sweet breakdown of some sort. I like that style of breakdown where its just driving and pounding at the same time, so i'll probably put some sweet guitar over it.
5. what kind of gear do you use? and how does writing songs work?
Its pretty simplistic actually. I use my ESP EX-351 and Marshall AVT-50, we use a pretty nice mic that we stole from a buddy, and an array of computer software. When I write songs, sometimes i will write sweet riffs and then program a beat, but sometimes i just program sweet beats and shred til i find something i like.
6. how does the drum programing work and how did you learn to do the drum programming?
The drum programming is all self taught. i have a program on my computer that i use, and its pretty easy to use once you know what you're doing. Drum programming on the computer is never too hard, you just need a good sense of rhythm.
7. how's ohios scene? any sick new bands from there?
Ohio's scene is pretty watered down for the most part, at least compared to places like pittsburgh and new jersey. However, we do have a few really sweet bands like Cryptic Abuse and A Night To Dismember. Ohio is actually..believe it or not...infested with emo kids. I'd like to see an uprising in the metal scene so we can kick those fuckers out.
8. what releases are you going to have and will there be any merch to coincide with those releases?
Well, blunt force abortion is still in its younger years. Merch will be available, and a new split and full length should be available before the year is over.
9. what bands have you been into recently?
recently i've been listening to the faceless, as for us, cephalotripsy, foetopsy, all shall perish, necrotorture, and anything that comes my way.
10. as for your guitar playing style you use a lot of patterns and variations that range from slow to fast parts and the riffs are unpredictable and complex so who influences your playing style?
I've been playing guitar for a long time. I've been through a variety of phases and picked up lots of tricks from different genres. The person who most influences me is Marty Friedman of Megadeth. I love his style and the eastern scales he uses are pretty fuckin badass. I take a mix of all the stuff i hear and try to maintain my own style as best as i can.
11. what's your plan for the band and will you be playing any shows?
Oh yeah, we'll be playing shows...as soon as we get a drummer who can play our stuff. We've got the rest of the live band set up, so its just a matter of time. I want to continue writing all the music for a while, after all, this is my project musically and this is how i vent from time to time.
any last words?
keep it slam, and BFA is coming for you and your kids!!!
